Peridot, the August birthstone, is one of the most beautiful gemstones in the world. It has been used for jewellery for thousands of years and makes the ideal August birthday gift. Tsai by Tsai are proud to use peridot in much of our jewellery, as the luscious and natural green tones it brings remind us so much of the vast green tea fields and forests of Taiwan – here are some of our favourite styling options, as well as a little history on this most alluring of gemstones.
The word “peridot” has its roots in the Arabic “faridat”, meaning gem. It has been found all over the world in places as diverse as China, Egypt, Tanzania and the USA. It is found decorating the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Cologne and is believed to have been the true identity of the “emeralds” for which Cleopatra was so famous. Due to its soft makeup it can be susceptible to scratch damage from other, harder stones so we should always be sure to store it carefully.
Pinglin pieces feature gorgeous strands of peridot
Of all our peridot pieces, the most striking is surely our Pinglin set. If you want to make a big impression with your jewellery these will style perfectly with business outfits – a strand of bright green gemstones on a necklace pairs well with a crisp white shirt – or evening wear, 2 pendant earrings with 15 peridot stones on each creating a dazzling impression when worn alongside your most glamorous dress.
Peridot jewellery looks fabulous alone or paired with other gemstones
If you are looking for something a little more understated, our San Shi collection will sit alongside lighter summer garments without overwhelming them, making them the ideal choice for weekend or resort wear. August is, after all, the end of the summer, so why not take advantage of the last of the sunshine by hitting the beach or the park for a break. The dainty chain earrings will move as you do, bringing a bit of energy and fun to your look, and allowing you to get creative by wrapping the chain round your ear if you have more than one piercing.
Di Diao Hoop Earrings feature one solitary peridot gemstone
Sometimes we want just a touch of colour to brighten up a more reserved occasion. Our Di Diao hoops, featuring a solitary peridot stone suspended perfectly at the centre of a hoop, will do exactly that. Each pair is crafted in Sterling silver and plated with a thick layer of rose gold – the beautiful pink tone allows the green of the gemstone to really pop. When you want a little sparkle, but nothing more, they are the perfect choice.
Whatever your style, or the wearing occasion, peridot is an excellent gemstone to choose for your jewellery. The beautiful shades of green will bring nature and life to every outfit you pair it with, and pair with such a wide range of colours you will keep finding new ways to wear it for years to come. No wonder it has been popular for so long, no doubt it will remain so long into the future.
